Fuel Prices Go Up: Petrol Now GH¢16.39, Diesel at GH¢17.60 Effective September 1

Consumers across Ghana will have to dig deeper into their pockets as fuel prices witness a noticeable upward adjustment at the pumps. Starting today, September 1, 2026, the price of petrol is set to sell at GH¢16.39 per litre, while diesel will go for GH¢17.60 per litre.

This development is based on the latest outlook report released by the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) for the September 1 to 16 pricing window. According to the Chamber’s projections, petrol has seen an increase of about 4.80%, whereas diesel prices have risen by 2.10%. Conversely, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is expected to see a slight decline of 0.93%, bringing its projected price to about GH¢13.73 per kilogramme.

The price hikes have been primarily attributed to the rising costs of crude oil and refined petroleum products on the international market. COMAC indicated that average global crude oil prices increased by 1.75%, moving from US$90.53 to US$92.11 per barrel. Additionally, refined petroleum products experienced significant price surges, with petrol leading at an 8.86% increase and diesel following with a 5.51% jump.

Interestingly, these increases come despite the Ghanaian cedi appreciating by 3.64% against the US dollar between August 12 and 27, marking the currency’s strongest level since June 2026. Unfortunately, the gains made by the local currency were not sufficient to fully offset the impact of the surging global oil prices on the domestic market.

With over 200 oil marketing companies operating within the country, pump prices are expected to vary slightly across different fuel stations depending on their individual pricing decisions and market competition. However, COMAC’s projections serve as a strong indicator of the prevailing market conditions, urging commercial drivers and everyday consumers to adjust their transportation budgets accordingly.
